CORNIGLIA - CINQUE TERRE

liguria

The origin of Corniglia dates back to the Roman time. Its name derives from "Gens Cornelia", the Roman family owner of the place. Corniglia is located on a hundred of meters high steep promontory, close to a hill many vineyards, from which it is possible to admire all the other four towns of the Cinque Terre. To reach the city centre, it is necessary to climb up the "Lardarina", a long stair formed by 377 steps, or down the street from the train station. Corniglia has agricultural vocation and has an urban typology close to the rural centres of the interior with lower houses. The old village develops along "Via Fieschi". There are ruins of a XVI century rock.

Church of San Pietro

The Church of Saint Peter rises in the upper part of Corniglia. It was built in 1334 on a pre-existing XI century building. It has a Baroque style, with some Gothic and Ligurian elements. The XIV century facade is adorned by a 1351 Carrara white marble rose window, very similar to Manarola's Saint Lawrence one. The inside is divided into three aisles with Baroque vault. Interesting are a polyptich situated at the bottom altar of the right aisle and a christening font of the XII century.

Oratory of the "Disciplinati" of Santa Caterina

The XVIII century oratory of the "Disciplinati" of Saint Catherine is located in the heart of Corniglia, in the small square "Largo Taragio". In its posterior part it opens the wide sea.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces in Corniglia

The sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces is probably the result of a XIX century restoration of a preexisting medieval chapel. The adored image is a painting of the Madonna with Child, placed above the altar. Originally it showed at both sides of the Madonna Saint Bernardo from Chiaravalle and San Bernardino from Siena, now placed in two different ovals.
