Naro Castle

The Naro Castle, in the Province of Agrigento, rises in the highest point of the town. Most probably the castle was built during the XII century taking place of a pre-existing Arab fortress which was erected during the period of the Arab rule in Sicily. Frederic III of Aragona in 1330 desidered changing the original structure of the castle, so he decided to add a "Mastio" (a square tower) where he lived during his stay in Naro. Some years later the Count Cabrera, because Naro was loyal to the Queen Bianca of Navarra, stole in the castle with treason and, after that he had killed the lord of the castle of that time, Lop di Leone, cut his body up and immured an his relative. It is dated to the Norman period the story of the lady of the castle Giselda that fell in love with her servant Bertrano, and was caught by the jealous husband, Pietro Calvello. The lover was killed and his body was tossed from the tower. Giselda, shut up in a cold cell, died for the sorrow. The popular fantasy tells of a white woman ghost that in the clear night wanders in the terrace of the tower. There are also evidences about an underground that was used as emergency exit. In 1912 the castle was declared National Monument. From the tower of the castle we can see a very huge beautiful landscape.
