RAGUSA
sicilia
Ragusa is the capital of the homonymous Province. It is built on a wide limestone hill between two deep valleys, "Cava San Leonardo" and "Cava Santa Domenica". In 1693 the city was destroyed by a huge earthquake, which killed some 5000 inhabitants. Following this catastrophe the city was largely rebuilt, many Baroque buildings date from this period. Most of the population moved to a new settlement, calling the new municipality "Ragusa Superiore" (High Ragusa) and the ancient city "Ragusa Ibla". Together with other seven cities in the Val di Noto, it is listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Only the town of Ragusa can count 18 monuments listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ragusa is also famous to be a natural set of various movies and Italian fictions as "Il Commissario Montalbano" (Montalbano Commissioner) by Andrea Camilleri.
