WINE & CHEESE TOUR - Montepulciano Pienza Montalcino
MONTEPULCIANO – Historical Centre and Tasting of
“Nobile di Montepulciano” Wine.
Montepulciano CityThe Town Hall, with its beautiful mid tower
dates back to the XVI century, recalls, at large, Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. It is a simple building with Guelph merlons and solid corbels. In the lower part the ashlar-work is irregular and rough, as if it camouflaged the opening of rectangular windows which are present in the upper level in a regular rhythm. From the tower you can admire a beautiful large panorama mostly during clear and bright days. In front of the Town Hall there is Palazzo del Monte - Contucci. In 1519 Antonio da Sangallo the Old began works wanted by the Cardinal of Santa Prossede, Antonio Ciocchi Del Monte, who was Pope under the name of Julius III. The Cardinal get many buildings pulled down to make room for the palace defined by Vasari as "well refined and worked with great elegance".
The Well in Piazza Grande supports two lions which keep the Medicis' coat-of-arms. It is like the coat-of-arm in the Rectory of St. Blaise. As a result, it is attributed to Sangallo. Close to it, inward Poice-Court Building presents its XIV Century side in Via Ricci. It was dwelled by the capitain of the population. When you get to Via Ricci, you find on the left a building attributed to Baldassarre Peruzzi (XVI century), Palazzo Ricci. Its facade underlines the elegant rhythm of the surface by a cornice gathering windows and recourring on the upper level at the basis of the mezzanine. Going downwards, on the left, there is the Chapel of St. Antony, called as "of the Knights of St. Stephen". Down the street, there is Palazzo Benincasa with the bust of Gian Gastone dei Medici in the portal. A large square opens out into a panorama of the country. The Church of St. Francis, in the past dedicated to St. Margaret, presents on its right facade the remains of a pulpit from where St. Bernardine is said to preach. The portal is in Gothic style.
After having visited the town, you get to Church of Madonna di San Biagio by Antonio di Francesco Giamberti, called as Antonio da Sangallo the Old. It was consacrated by Pope Clement VII in 1529. It rises in open country. It was built on the remains of the ancient parish church of St. Blaise where, according to the tradition, the painting of Our Lady was seen moving her eyes. It presents a Greek-cross plan surmonted by a dome and with four equal wings. In the south wing there is a semicircular sacristy, whereas at both sides of the northern wing there are two bell towers, one of which is unfinished. All the wings present a Doric lower level with metopes and triglyphs as a seal. The upper level has an architrave and is surmonted by a tympanum. Simple decorations adorn classical portals and windows. The dome stands on a tambour divided by Ionic pilaster strips alternated with niches. It ends with a thin and elegant lantern. Inside, there are any ornaments but the rhythm of large arches and classical oranmental elements, such as tympanums, metopes, triglyphs and niches with their altars in superb harmony ending with a slim dome lighted up by the lantern. The big high altar is by Albertini (1584). Frescoes representing the Transit, the Assumptionand, the Coronation of Our Lady are attributed to Zuccari (XVI century). In front of the church there is the Plebiscite or the Rectory of St. Blaise. The beautiful well with its curved line is like to the well in Piazza Grande.

PIENZA –
The Cathedral, Historical Buildings and Tasting of Cheese “Pecorino” (of sheep) of Pienza.
Situated in the hearth of the old town of Pienza, Piazza Pio II is an excellent example of Pope Pius II's Humanist ideals of Renaissance architecture according to the rules of Vetruvius. Pope Pius II commissioned Bernardo Rossellino to design the square together with the splendid buildings which surround it and they were built between 1459-62. The renown "domus vitrea", has an interesting Classical façade while the interior is in Gothic style and houses important works of art by illustrious artists such as Giovanni di Paolo, Matteo di Giovanni, the Vecchietta, and Sano di Pietro, in the apse are fine wooden choir stalss in gothic style. Below the Cathedral is the crypt of San Giovanni with a baptismal font by Rossellino. The foundations of the cathedral were realised at the beginning of the 1900's to consolidate the structure of the cathedral. The "Museo Diocesano", which has recently been opened in the "Palazzo Vescovile" ("Palazzo Borgia") contains marvellous 15th and 16th century Flemish tapestries, painted panels and wooden sculptures by Bartolo di Fredi, the Vecchietta, the "Maestro dell'Osservanza", illuminated choir books with miniatures by Sano di Pietro and Pellegrino di Mariano, a finely sculptured, embossed crucifix of the 14th century and the famous cope of Pius II in Opus Anglicanum, finely embroidered in gold thread with over 150 figures. In the majestic "Palazzo Piccolomini", the papal residence is another museum where you can visit the arm's room, the Pope's bedroom, the library and a show case of medals belonging to Pius II and Pius III. The beautiful Loggia overlooks the Hanging Garden one of the first of this style in Europe. On the east side of the square is the "Palazzo Civico", also realised by Rossellino and in a perfect harmony with the surrounding architecture of the square. In Corso Il Rossellino, is the early Gothic Church of St. Francesco with some painted panels of the school of Duccio Boninsegna, some 14th and 15th century frescoes, a Madonna attributed to Luca Signorelli and paintings by Matteo Balducci and Ugolino Lorenzetti. The wooden Crucifix by the "Maestro di San Pietro in Rosso" has been moved to the Museo Diocesano.

Montalcino tour of the city and country:
The study of the fortified complex is not simple because of the many architectonic manipulations undertaken in the centuries. The castle, with its irregular squared shape, is articulated around a courtyard, three sides are occupied by different types of buildings, the fourth is closed by a mighty walled curtain. On this side is open the main gate, endowed with a breteche in bricks and stone. A crenellated tower dominates the castle. Along the external perimeter of the walls is still possible, in some points, to notice their escarpment and the beautiful tower of the northern angle, the unique with the original medieval aspect. On the north side is opened a secondary gate, now approachable thanks to a stone ramp, added in a later period, rested on two large arches. The courtyard "of honour" is a splendid example architecture of the Renaissance, built up when the castle became "palace", with low arched hold up on octagonal pillars, a large fireplace, domical vault, and one Medicean coat of arms of the XVI century, placed here after the fall of Montalcino. It is still possible to notice some loopholes, today located a little above the level of the ground. This testifies the raising of the area around the walls: originally the main gate was accessed by a removable ramp. The successive addition of other inner buildings created a second courtyard "of service", lacking in decorations.
SANT'ANTIMO ABBEY
Just a few kilometers from Montalcino rises the Sant'Antimo Abbey (1118). This is one of the most beautiful Romanesque monastic churches in existence. Its Romanesque-Lombard style gives its structure both a physical force and delicacy at the same time. The tradition, enough reliable, wants that Charles Magno in 781, of return from Rome along the street Francigena, transited for the Amiata mountain with his court and his army. In many were struck by the plague and, to stop the scourge, the emperor made a vow and founded the Abbey. It is not even excluded that in the place a Roman villa existed and is known with certainty that in the IV-V century Castelnuovo of the abbot was an important lived center, endowed with a parish, then disappearance.
After the passage of the abbey to the ownerships of the State in 1867, a long period of restaurations was opened that saved the whole building. The jobs, initiated in 1872 and finished in 1895, brought the church to the actual aspect. The enchantment is total and the armony with which the geometries architettoniiches of the abbey are integrated with the landscape it overcomes every comparison. The facade remained unfinished, introduces a portal, probable solution of shift to a plan that foresaw two of them, surmounted by a datable lintel to the first half the XII century and capitals, friezes and ferrules of few back. The element that confers to this church a French imprint more than every other is the scheme basilicale with deambulatorio to radial chapels, only in Tuscany and among the little presents in Italy. To the morning, the sun plays with the stone that is the most precious among all those used for the church in the deambulatorio: alabaster and travertino, with which capitals and coloumns are realized. Long 44 meters, the church is guarded to the entry by two lions stilofori, destined probablely to the external portal, datable to the XII century and attributed to the Teacher of Cabestany as the stupendous capital with the scenes of "Daniel in the pit of the lions".
