Ansonica is one of the principal native Sicilian white varietes. It is cultivate primarily in the provinces of Trapani,
Palermo and Agrigento. In particular,the primary aromas of this variety give the wines unmistakable personality. The Ansonica produced by Donnafugata at Contessa Entellina
displays great refinement due to rationalization of the techniques of cultivation employed in securing the best balance between the variety's vegetation and production.
is the most rapresentative cultivar in the panorama of Sicily's native varietes. Since a viticulture primarly oriented to quality has substantialy reduced yields per vine, Nero d'Avola has become an attractive variety. And it could attract even more interest because of scientific research
focused on clonal selection. Currently,
no clones of nero d'Avola
have been identified, althought many "populations" are recognized. One of them has been discovered in the Contessa Entellina district by Donnafugata's technical staff.
The estate is selecting vines from among
that "population", which is regarded as responding best to Donnafugata's quality requirements, for the planting of the new vineyards.
