The Primaziale, The Leaning Tower, The Cathedral, The Camposanto (Cemetary), The Baptistery.During its period of greatest prestige and power, Pisa, which was a rapidly-expanding city, wanted to erect its most important church, crowned by what is now known as the Leaning Tower, the Baptistery and the Camposanto. The architecture of the four structures, their harmony, was not the fruit of a single mind. Infact, the square is the result of the work of more than one brilliant architect working over several periods on the overall structure. Reinterpreting the geometry of architecture and borrowing from Islamic Art, they invented a new style: Romanesque. Pre-dating the Florentine Renaissance this style is found in figurative art as well in the work of exceptional artists such as Nicola and his son Giovanni, who influenced artists such as Brunelleschi, Donatello and Michelangelo himself.

FLORENCE-PISA-LUCCA
SHORE PRIVATE EXCURSION IN TUSCANY

EXCURSION IN PISA:THE BELL TOWER KNOWN AS THE LEANING TOWER
TOWN OF PISA;SQUARE CAMPO DEI MIRACOLI;
DUOMO AND BAPTISTERY
The first stone of the Leaning Tower was laid on Assumption Day, August 9th 1173. While it is possible to locate the names of the artists who signed their works in the other buildings in the square, the Leaning Tower has no such autograph. This curious fact adds to the several hundred year long debate over the first author and the first ten years of the construction of the Leaning Tower. In the year 1185 the first signs of the sagging foundation were seen, and the consequent inclination of the tower caused the halting of construction for nearly a century. The continuation of the tower was entrusted to Giovanni di Simone who had been working on the bell tower of San Francesco. The architect showed extraordinary skill in limiting the consequences of the inclination, thereby allowing construction to continue until 1284, the date of the defeat of the Meloria. The final storey of the bell tower, the seventh, used as a belfry, was conceived and realised by Tommaso Pisano approximately halfway through the 14th century.

EXCURSION IN LUCCA:
Lucca was founded by the Etruscans; Piazza San Michele occupies
the site of the ancient forum. Traces of the
amphitheatre
can still be seen in the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro.
The amphitheatre, where gladiatorial shows and games were tradionally held, was built in Lucca in the second half of the 1st century A.D.. The discovery, during the demolition of some walls, of which we have news in the 19th century, of coins belonging to the reign of Emperor Claudius, suggests that work on the building was begun after the middle of the century. However, the it certainly wasn't finished before the late Flavian Age, when funds were granted by an important citizen, Quintus Vibius, whose rank was that of an "eques" or knight and who, according to an inscription in his honour, found inside the arena in 1810, donated 100.000 sestertii in ten years. Progressively, the original function of the building was lost; with its proportions and position outside the town walls it became a threat to the town itself, as it risked falling into the hands of eventual enemies. It is likely that, from the 6th century A.D., during the Gothic wars and the siege of Narsetes, the amphitheatre was fortified for military purposes and its outer arches closed. Successively, other buildings used as houses and, for a certain period, even as prisons, were added to the structures that had survived abandon and plunder. Between 1830 and 1839, following a project by the architect Lorenzo Nottolini, the buildings accupying the ancient arena were pulled down and the inner area, its profile slightly adjusted, became the present day piazza. The remains of the Roman Amphitheatre are preserved, incorporated in buildings bordering the present day "Piazza dell'Anfiteatro", in the northern part of the town. The elliptic shape of the piazza corresponding, to great extent, to the area of the ancient arena, is the result of a 19th century restoration that permits us to appreciate the volume and the general outline of the ancient monument. Besides, on the outer perimeter, along the present day "Via dell'Anfiteatro", we can see some of the original walls, in particular in front of the "Piazza Scalpellini" and to the north, between the eastern gate, the only ancient one that remains and "Via del Portico".

EXCURSION IN FLORENCE:
Florence (Italian: Firenze) is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany,
Italy, and of the province of Florence. From 1865 to 1870 the city was also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. Arno River; Pitti Palace residence of the Medici family.
Florence is also famous for its magnificent art and
architecture.
The city has been called the Athens of the Middle Ages.
The Accademia Gallery was the first academy of drawing in Europe. It was founded in 1561 with high patronage of the Medici, specifically that of Cosimo I, by Giorgio Vasari, Agnolo Bronzino and Bartolomeo Ammannati, three of the central artists of Mannerism. At first the academy met in the cloister of the Church of the Santissima Annunziata. It was taken for granted at the outset that all the members of the Accademia were male; when the Accademia welcomed Artemisia Gentileschi to membership, it was a signal honor to a woman. Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke of Tuscany, decreed in 1784 that all the schools of drawing in Florence be combined under one roof, under the direction of the Accademia, now renamed "Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze" (Academy of Fine Arts Florence) and that it was to contain a gallery of paintings by old masters to help the studies of the young artists. The Accademia and the adjoining Gallery still occupy the premises that were assigned in via Ricasoli, a former convent and hospice. The Grand Duke also decided to include among the arts protected in this way, a conservatory of music (the Cherubini Conservatory) and, more extraordinary, a school of art restoration ( the "Opificio delle Pietre Dure"). The Gallery of the Accademia di Belle Arti houses the orginal David of Michelangelo since 1873. The sculpture was allegedly brought to the Accademia for reasons of conservation, although other factors were involved in its move from its previous outdoor location on Piazza della Signoria. The original intention was to create a "Michelangelo Museum", with original sculptures and drawings, to celebrate the fourth centenary of the artist's birth. Among the notable Renaissance works on display are an outstanding collection of XV and XVI century Florentine paintings by Paolo Uccello, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli and Andrea del Sarto and, from the High Renaissance, Giambologna's original plaster for the Rape of the Sabine Women.
